SERVICES

We offer free pregnancy testing to all requesting abortion care or to those desiring to maintain their pregnancy. We will refer those desiring to maintain their pregnancy to a  private obstetrical practice in the area that provides superior care with deliveries at a local hospital..

First trimester abortion is performed by a procedure called vacuum aspiration also known as a "D&C", the safest and most common form of abortion in the United States. The procedure is done between 6 and 13 weeks past the last menstrual period (LMP). A complete history and physical exam is performed initially along with an ultrasound to determine the gestational age of the pregnancy and to make sure the pregnancy is in the uterus. We use local anesthesia, which is safer than going to sleep, to perform the procedure. The cervix is dilated followed by aspiration of the contents of the uterus. The total procedure takes about 6 minutes. After the procedure, you will rest in our recovery area before going home. More information on the procedure can be found on the website of the National Abortion Federation at www.prochoice.org/facts and select "What is Surgical Abortion."

The abortion pill "Mifeprex or RU486" is a drug that blocks a hormone called progesterone that is needed to continue a pregnancy. When combined with another medicine called Misoprostol, it can end an early pregnancy (49 days or less from your last menstrual period). RU486 will only be used for women ages 18 to 40. It will not be used in women that smoke or have certain medical problems, or are unable to meet certain conditions. The physician will determine if RU486 is right for you.

Emergency contraception (also known as the morning after pills) is a high dose of the hormones found in birth control pills. It is recommended for use during the first 72 hours after unprotected intercourse with the goal of preventing a pregnancy. A pregnancy test will be done and a history taken by a medical provider. If you miss your next menstrual period by more than a week, you must immediately take another pregnancy test and seek medical care.

Post abortion follow-up is a key part to the abortion procedure. After the procedure, you will be required to have a follow-up exam  two to three weeks post procedure. The exam will include a pregnancy test and a pelvic exam by a medical provider. If you choose not to follow-up here, then you must make arrangements to see the provider of your choice within two weeks. You must inform them that you have had an abortion procedure and tell them how far pregnant you were.

We are glad to assist you in any way that we can, and remember that your health and emotional comfort is important to us.
